Alpha Kappa Psi: Well Connected!

What does a professional business fraternity do?

Alpha Kappa Psi creates opportunities to learn new skills, including leadership,  organizational skills, time management, networking, social skills, and professionalism.  There are a variety of local and national programs, workshops, and activities that will introduce and enhance these business skills.

Do you only have business-related activities in AKPsi?

Alpha Kappa Psi's main goal is the professional development of its members, but on our "downtime," we like to have fun and enjoy social activities as well.   Iota Phi's social activities range from cookouts to our spring formal, and each activity is another opportunity to interact with your fellow brothers.

What are the requirements to join your chapter?

A cumulative GPA of 2.50 or higher, completed at least 12 credit hours at Winthrop University, and must be at least a sophomore.

What do I have to do to rush AKPsi?

To rush AKPsi come to a RUSH information meeting, and also participate in at least two RUSH events.

  What happens after RUSH?

If you are selected to continue into the pledge program, you will have the opportunity to view Alpha Kappa Psi in greater depth.  Also, it gives the brothers of the Iota Phi chapter a chance to get to know you and evaluate you as a prospective member.

How are rushees selected to continue into the pledge program?

Rushees who meet the RUSH qualifications, and who have demonstrated strong merit, are those who are selected to continue into our pledge program.  Qualities that stand out in potential members include dedication, enthusiasm, honesty, and hard work.  No rushee will be excluded on the basis of race, color, creed, sex, sexual orientation, personal appearance, age, national origin, political affiliation, or physical or mental disability.

What does the pledge program involve?

Time, hard work, and dedication.  The pledge program is equivalent to taking another class.   During the pledge program, we will cover history of the fraternity and basic professional and organizational skills. This includes quizzes, professional workshops, interviews, social events, and fundraising. The program is based on a point system so success has to do with a person’s ability to manage his or her time.  Pledges will also be required to meet once a week as a group and must fulfill basic requirements in order to qualify to take the national exam.

  How much does it cost?

Since we are a professional business fraternity, we are significantly less expensive than most Greek organizations.  The initial pledge program fee is $60, which covers local and national expenses.  This fee is non-refundable.  If membership is conferred on a prospective member, a one-time initiation fee of $105 will be required. Upon initiation, new members will receive information regarding brotherhood membership fees.  However, financial obligations are taken seriously in our organization, and any person who is in arrears for such obligations will lose certain privileges.

Are all members called Brothers? Or do the women get called something else?

Men and women are all called Brothers. After several years of being an all-male fraternity, women were admitted into Alpha Kappa Psi in 1976.  Each member has equal rights and privileges and the word “brother” transcends its gender implications by representing and standing for kinship, fraternal loyalty, and friendship.

I’ve heard that hazing exists in Greek fraternities and sororities. Do you haze?

Absolutely NOT!  Our chapter, as well as Winthrop University, has strict policies against  all inappropriate behavior.  It has no place in business and no place in Alpha Kappa Psi activities.  For details of our policies, ask us about our national regulations and codes concerning hazing, alcohol & drugs, and sexual harassment.

How do I contact someone in Alpha Kappa Psi?

Several ways.  One way is to e-mail the chapter at akpsi_winthrop@hotmail.com; If you feel more comfortable talking to someone individually, you can get the email address of one of the brothers from the chapter roster. You may also talk to any brother you see around campus.  We look forward to hearing from you and will be happy to answer any questions you may have about Alpha Kappa Psi.
