I am an associate professor of English at
Winthrop University in Rock Hill, SC. I live in Charlotte, NC,
and I am a native Charlottean. I received a B.S. in English at
Appalachian State University in 1977, an M.A. from Appalachian in
1981, and a Ph.D. from the University of Rochester in 1986. I
spent one year as a visiting instructor at the University of
Wisconsin-Madison, and taught at Converse College in Spartanburg,
SC before coming to Winthrop in 1993. I teach composition and
American literature, and I am the director of graduate studies in
English. My current research interests include Mark Twain,
American humor, American Transcendentalism, and environmental
literature. I also have a number of personal interests, including
bluegrass and other acoustic music, gardening, photography,
fiction writing, bird watching, politics, neolithic monuments,
and The Andy Griffith Show. All of that is reflected in
my web page, or will be when I get through building it!
