Wondering what we have done in the past? Check out our History page to learn more information about us and become better informed on past events and ventures the Chinese Martial Arts Club has been involved in.

  Winthrop Chinese Martial Arts Association was officially formed sometime in the Spring of 2002. The first official club meeting was 8/31/2003. Kenneth Manos was the 1st president. John Bryan the 1st treasurer, Teresa Hoang was the 1st vice-president, and Natalie Dowd was the 1st secretary. The first members to join the club were John Bryan, Ernest Sanders, and Teresa Hoang. The first official meeting was 8/31/2003. John Bryan, and Teresa Hoang are the last original members left.

2008 CACMA National Kung Fu Tournament

On Saturday, CMA traveled to Charlotte to represent Winthrop in the biggest CACMA tournament of the year.  This year we were extremely successful.  Everyone that participated walked away with an award to show for all of their hard work this year.  We had five students and three instructors enter the tournament in various events.  Great job to everyone that went, it was a great way to end another successful year.

St. Anne's International Festival

On Saturday, CMA made a trip down the street to St. Anne's church to perform for their international festival.  The crowd and the members enjoyed the numerous forms performed by club members.  The members also had the pleasure of enjoying other cultures that were present at the festival; like the international cuisines.  Great job CMA for another great performance!

Asian Awareness Festival

On Thursday, CMA gave a short demonstration of the style of kung fu we practice and a brief explanation behind what we do.  Several forms were performed and there was also an informative booth at which members were happy to answer any questions the audience had.

Unveiling the Dragon!

On Wednesday, CMA hosted their second annual cultural event for Winthrop campus.  This event not only showed off some of the skill that has been acquired while training this year, but along with the demonstration, they also informed the audience about some of the different aspects that makes up kung fu.  Some of the topics were chi, the difference between internal and external styles and the physics of kung fu.  Thanks to everyone who supported the club by coming and everyone who participated!

CMA Gives Back to the Community

On Friday and Saturday several CMA members and instructors went to the York County Humane Society in Fort Mill to lend a helping hand. While they were there CMA walked and played with some of the animals that needed some extra attention. The volunteers working at the shelter were very appreciative of the little help the club was able to offer. The club members enjoyed interacting with the animals and we plan to continue going back as much as possible!

Who Gets 13 Trophies in a Open Martial Arts Tournament? CMA Does!

Talk about representing! CMA rocked the house showing other martial arts schools and styles what Kung Fu is all about. Everyone did a fantastic job. Those who participated showed the class and skill of our organization. Congratulations everyone!

Nothing Tastes Better than Martial Arts!

Once again Chinese Martial Arts gives Winthrop a “Taste of the World!” This was the first real performance together for the 2007 class of CMA. They did a great job on their first performance!

12th Annual Fall Classics Kung Fu Tournament

Several CMA members participated in the Annual CACMA 2007 Fall Classic again. Adam Nelson won silver in advanced empty hands forms and bronze in advanced weapon forms. John Bryan won gold in beginner weapons forms. John also received fourth in push hands and fourth in advanced empty hand forms. Victor Wilder also participated in his first tournament and won silver in beginner open hand forms. This was also Delmar's first time acting as a judge at a tournament. Congratulations to everyone for representing CMA!

Shaolin Monks Come to Charlotte 

How many people in their life get to see real Shaolin monks perform? Well CMA did! Our educational field trip enlightened us to other styles of kung fu rarely seen like Scorpion. The club was refreshed to see many of the same exercises within the show that we do in training on a weekly basis. The monks were amazing and revitalized the martial spirit of the club!

CMA Hits the Big Apple!

CMA instructors and members, Shifu Keoni Everington, Adam Nelson, Phouthong Phimmarrath, Delmar Minor and Vic Wilder, went to New York to train with Grandmaster Yunjiang Sui. The group had 6 hour training sessions for 3 days in Baguazhang and Meihuazhuang.  The sessions were held in Prospect Park in Brooklyn. Everyone who participated came back with a greater understanding of martial arts and life. For more information about our Grandmaster, check out the links page or type in Yunjiang Sui on Wikipedia.

CMA Performs at Fort Mill

After participating in the cystic fibrosis walk those Winthrop martial artists were at it again. This time Fort Mill was the hot spot. CMA performed Meihuazhuang, Praying Mantis, Laobazhang, Dingshibazhang, 64 palms and Shaolin 7. CMA would like to  thank Fort Mill for allowing us to showcase our skills.




CMA Walks for Cystic Fibrosis

Once again CMA is helping the community. This time the cause was for cystic fibrosis. CMA led the walkers in stretches and other exercises to prepare them for the 5 mile journey around Cherry Park. CMA appreciates and enjoys being able to help the community in anyway possible. The club hopes to be a part of this event for years to come.

CMA Breaks It Down at Clubs and Orgs Festival

CMA had to show Winthrop who was boss when it comes down to gettin crunk! CMA members showcased martial arts as well as dancing ability at the Annual Clubs and Orgs festival. As usual the club had a great support from its membership. Great job guys and Twist Da Fist!

CMA Wows the Crowd at St. Anne's International Festival Again

CMA was on the ball again as the group performed at St. Anne's Catholic Church for their annual International Festival. The members showed their skills off by performing Continuous Fist, Beng Bu, Staff and Straight Sword, Long fist 6, Dingshi Bazhang, LaoBazhang and Yang Style Tai Chi. Everyone did a wonderful job! Way to end the 2007 school year with a bang!

CMA Cultural Event a Success

CMA members put on an educational and entertaining cultural event for the students of Winthrop. The topics discussed were Martial Arts and the Body, What You Don't Know concerning Martial Arts, What is Chi, Acupuncture, The History of Martial Arts, and the Philosophy of the Martial Arts. Thanks to all the speakers and performers that made this event a success!

CMA performs for Jabberwock Pageant

CMA members Courtney Woods, Adam Nelson, John Bryan and Delmar Minor performed for the Delta Sigma Theta's Jabberwock Pageant. These club members razzle dazzled the crowd with their Shaolin. Each member took a piece of a Shaolin form along with a weapon to show their skill! Once again CMA shows Winthrop what true martial arts is about! Thanks guys!

CMA Hosts Show for Chinese Children

CMA members Brittany King, Christine Cruell, Teresa Hoang, and Jim Scott performed at Myers Park Presbyterian Church in Charlotte. The performance was put on for adopted Chinese children to give them a taste of home. These club members put on an electrifying show! Brittany performed the Eight Palms Bagua set while Jim wowed the crowd with his Tai Chi. Teresa performed the Labazhang while Christine did her patented Shaolin Snake form. Great job to these performers!

CMA gets a Taste of the World

CMA members Adam Nelson, John Bryan, and Delmar Minor gave a riveting performance at the Taste of the World International Show. Delmar performed 32 palms of the 64 palms Bagua set along with staff techniques. John performed Long Fist # 3 and part of a cane form. Adam exploded with the Praying Mantis Beng Bu form and nunchaku. CMA gave one of their best performances yet!

Beijing Opera comes to Winthrop

CMA went to the StrangeCandy Beijing Opera here on campus. It was a great show with drama, comedy, and kung fu choreography. It was a cultural experience that CMA members will never forget.

CMA holds another self defense seminar

CMA holds another self defense seminar for Phelps. CMA presented the Phelps girls with different self-defense scenarios to help them better defend themselves.

CMA members Adam Nelson and Sean Boyle participate in the Annual CACMA 2006 Fall Classic Adam Nelson won gold in Weapons, gold in internal styles, and silver in advanced empty hand forms. Adam also had s strong showing in advanced sparring. Sean participated in empty hands form receiving 4th out of eight people! He also participated in grappling in which he also had a strong showing. This was Sean’s first tournament. Congratulations to the two martial artists for representing CMA in excellence!

China Martial Arts Study Abroad Program A Great Adventure!

For those of you that missed it (I don't know what you were thinking!), the Spring Semester course PHED 450 Special Topics in Physical Education: China Martial Arts Study Abroad Program was a three credit hour course that met four times during the Spring 2006 Semester and culminated with a trip to Beijing China from May 14th - May 28th. The purpose was to train with Master Sui Yunjiang in Plum Blossom Fist and Baguazhang and to tour famous sites in Beijing such as The Great Wall, The Forbidden City, The Summer Palace, The Temple of Heaven, etc... There were six of us representing Winthrop including five students and Shifu Keoni Everington who served as the instructor and tour guide.  The two week odyssey was an amazing, action packed trip of a lifetime!  We went to see all the famous sites in Beijing, had excellent food, did great shopping, and learned some awesome Meihuazhuang and Baguazhang to take back to the US!

CMA Students Excel in the First National CACMA Tournament
CMA members Stephan Amvame, Adam Nelson, and Halle Russell earned gold, silver, and bronze medals against a tough field of competition at the 2006 CACMA National Kung Fu/Tai Chi Tournament. Stephan Amvame medaled in 7 out of the 10 events he competed in. Adam Nelson won four straight gold medals. CMA Members Complete Filming of "Kung Fu Woman"
CMA members Theresa Ferry and Shifu Keoni Everington participated in the filming of the short, independent film "Kung Fu Woman" in Wilmington, North Carolina. The film was shot at a studio at Cape Fear Community College and at various locations in the city of Wilmington. The film will be entered in spring and summer film competitions in the area. Keep an eye out for the Winthrop debut of "Kung Fu Woman" later this spring!

CMA Members Perform at "The Show" Multicultural Fashion and Talent Show Benefit
CMA's team represented by Teresa Hoang, Eric Miller, Delmar Minor, Adam Nelson, and Shifu Keoni Everington performed for "The Show" a fundraiser for cancer victims. CMA members performed Baguazhang, Deer Horn Knives, 2 Person Bagua Set, Xingyi 8 Elements 5 Animals, 2 Person Xingyi Set, Shaolin #7, Praying Mantis, 2 Person Basic Shaolin Set, Shaolin Straight Sword, and an advanced Shaolin 2 Person Set.

CMA Performers Win First Place at Winthrop Homecoming Talent Show
CMA's team represented by Christine Cruell and Adam Nelson won first place in the group section of the Winthrop Homecoming Talent Show. Christine and Adam performed a two person Shaolin sparring routine, followed by Emei Snake, and ended with Shaolin Straight Sword. The first place prize awarded was a $200 Wal-Mart card. Adam Nelson Stands Out at 10th Annual Fall Classics Kung Fu Tournament
Though Adam Nelson was the only representative to this year's Fall Classics, our club still came away with some impressive victories. His silver medal was out of a field of thirteen total competitors from various styles and schools, and his gold medal was against half a dozen competitors using many different weapons.

The Dragon Must Sleep Screening to be held November 2nd
Our Kung Fu film The Dragon Must Sleep has been approved for cultural credit at Winthrop University, and a screening will be held Wednesday, November 2nd at 8pm in Plowden Auditorium (Withers) on the Winthrop University Campus. The presentation will include Kung Fu forms, The Dragon Must Sleep film, and a presentation on the making of the movie.

If you or your friends are interesting in taking this one credit course at Winthrop in Chinese Martial Arts, please contact Shifu Keoni Everington at everingtonk@winthrop.edu everingtonk@winthrop.edu or 323-2551.  If you wish to add into the course, you have until the end of the day Friday, August 26th.

CMA students continued to build on their skills and came away with 15 total medals, more than all of last year's tournaments combined! Each student that participated won at least one gold medal.

Encore Presentation of "The Dragon Must Sleep" to be Held February 11th
The first screening of The Dragon Must Sleep was so successful that we're going to show it again Friday, February 11th at 8pm in Plowden Auditorium (Withers). The event will commence with a performance of Chinese martial arts followed by a presentation of the movie.
