Welcome to Friends of Liberia’s E-Newsletter:

Editor’s Corner

Friends of Liberia is a nongovernmental nonprofit membership organization, seeking to positively affect Liberia and Liberians through educational, social, and humanitarian programs and through advocacy efforts.  Dedicated individuals, with the financial and moral support of hundreds of members, have worked to end the civil wars of the 1990’s and helped to begin the rebuilding process in Liberia.  Hopefully (again) Liberia is finished with the corrupt government and civil wars that have characterized at least the last 25 years.  Friends of Liberia continues to work for a just society in Liberia.

Over the years Friends of Liberia has tried to keep the lines of communication open between the leadership and the membership of the organization.  Until now that communication has been through newsletters delivered by the U.S. Postal Service.  The costs, in volunteer time and postal fees, as well as the difficulty of real communication, have led the Board of Trustees of FOL to launch our new electronic newsletter.

Friends of Liberia not only hopes to inform its members of the activities of the organization more fully, but also to hear from its members on questions, concerns, dreams, and hopes.  In this inaugural e-newsletter we have a Chair Report from Frank Ardaiolo, the Chairman of the Board of Trustees, outlining where we are as an organization in the spring of 2004.  Jim McGeorge summarizes the membership numbers after the Holiday Appeal letter that was mailed in December 2003.  Stephanie Vickers offers a personal account of her trip to Liberia in December in support of FOL’s major initiative, LEAP / LET.  Jeanette Carter’s Advocacy Report brings us up to date on FOL’s advocacy efforts in post-Taylor Liberia. Stephanie Vickers also shares her fundraiser activities on behalf of LEAP / LET in a Member’s Activities column.  Initially we plan to continue this general structure for the e-newsletter: a general leadership commentary, membership / financial report, an FOL project report, an Advocacy Report, and a Member’s Activity column.

That’s one half of the equation; now for the other: members communicating with the organization.  What do you want to know about

FOL’s activities?  Where do you want FOL to go?  What should we be advocating?  How should we advocate?  Pick up paper and pen or sit down at that computer and let us know what you are thinking.  FOL’s address is on the home page; email us at www.fol.org or me directly at wfaudree@zlink.net.  Let’s communicate.

When we observed the 1997 elections it was truly inspiring to see the respect the Friends of Liberia had across the spectrum of the Liberian people.  This organization can continue to have a major impact in rebuilding Liberia.  FOL needs your continued financial support and just as importantly your love for Liberia and willingness to offer your talents to help FOL help Liberia.  Send that financial support today and offer those talents tomorrow.
