This past July I had the distinct pleasure of attending the wedding of Manfred Makor and Lynn Kalinoski in Charlotte, NC. Manfred (originally from Liberia) had just received his MBA degree from Winthrop University and I had gotten to know him and Lynn while attending my institution. They told me to expect a surprise at the wedding – and what a wonderful surprise it was! At each table setting, each guest received a rolled up parchment that stated the following:

We are grateful and honored to have each of you with us to share in this joyful time in our lives. In remembering others that are less fortunate circumstances than ourselves, a charitable donation has been made in each of our guest’s names to the following organization: Friends of Liberia Friends of Liberia (FOL) is a nongovernmental nonprofit membership organization, which seeks to positively affect Liberia and Liberians through educational, social, and humanitarian programs and through advocacy efforts.

Rather than spending money for wedding favors for each guest, Lynn and Manfred set aside the money planned for this and made a sizeable donation instead to FOL. What a wonderful and meaningful way to start a life time together! Thank you, Lynn and Manfred! All of us in FOL wish you much happiness. Please remember too to be creative in your giving to FOL. With your willingness to contribute your treasure, time or talent, FOL can continue to do good things for the Liberian people. Frank
