New Bylaws Proposed
by
Peter Levitov, FOL Board of Trustees
Over the past six months
the Board of Trustees has been considering modifications to the
Friends of Liberia's bylaws. An ad hoc committee, including Candace
Eastman, Torli Krua, Jane Martin, and Peter Levitov (chair), was
appointed to review the current bylaws and make recommendations to
the Board. The committee drafted a revised set of bylaws to comport
with what has evolved
over the years as FOL’s practice as well as to suggest refinements
that will enable the organization to operate smoothly in this
electronic age, given its new programmatic initiatives. For
example, the Executive Committee was to have met monthly in person
but, with our budgetary constraints and the fact that FOL members no
longer all live within driving distance of Washington, the draft
proposes that the Executive Committee meet quarterly either in
person, electronically, or by telephone.
The draft was presented
to the Board at its April 2 meeting in Washington, DC. After an
engaging discussion, the Board endorsed the draft presented by the
committee with a few minor changes. Since FOL still must operate
under its current bylaws, the proposed revision has been presented
to the entire membership for a vote. By this time all FOL members
should have received a ballot asking them to vote on the adoption of
the revised set of bylaws. Members may see the current bylaws and
the proposed revisions on the FOL web site (www.fol.org).
The current and proposed bylaws are integrated
in a single document, with the proposed changes in
italics and the proposed deletions are shown with
strikethroughs.
Please take a few
minutes to review the endorsed proposal and then cast your vote in
the return envelope.
