FOL Volunteer Report
Fall  2005

by Debbie Mattina, Volunteer Coordinator

In the spring of 2005, the Friends of Liberia Board of Trustees appealed to its members, asking if they would become more involved in FOL by volunteering to work on four committees.  The response was very positive with approximately twenty members indicating their willingness to volunteer.  Volunteers are being organized into four committees and will focus their efforts in the following areas:

Advocacy Identify organizations in the volunteer’s part of the country that cover Liberian issues; attend meetings to monitor and represent FOL; draft FOL position papers and/or news releases concerning Friends of Liberia issues.
Programs Explore developing new FOL programs in the areas of heath, agriculture, and education and find ways to sustain them.
Development Find new ways to support the work of FOL and its projects; create FOL fund-raising/social events at different locations around the United States; work with others to identify grant opportunities and foundations that might support Liberian projects.
Nominations Assist in the recruitment and nomination of future board members, officers, advisers and volunteers.

When I received the mailing asking for volunteers, I realized that it is possible to become more involved in FOL and helping Liberia fairly easily and from my home.  I had wanted to do something more for Liberia and volunteering with FOL is a way to do this.  So I volunteered to serve as FOL’s volunteer coordinator.  This will involve establishing and maintaining regular communication with each volunteer and assisting in the coordination of efforts among volunteers in the four committees.  FOL board members have signed on to lead the four committees and are working on defining tasks and projects.

In addition to working on committees volunteers can help FOL in other ways in its mission to serve the people of Liberia, especially at this time when elections hold the promise of a new beginning in Liberia – a time for rebuilding homes, schools, clinics, communities, etc.  Contact any of us and let us know where you might be able to help.  We can use help in small jobs with specific projects, with the website, with the e-zine, etc.  You don’t have to make a big time commitment to be a volunteer, but if you want to help, let us know and we can work something out.  Please feel free to contact me at dmattina88@yahoo.com.

I am pleased to be working as volunteer coordinator and look forward to sharing in the energies and efforts of the volunteers.  Together we can continue to contribute to Liberia.
