2006 JOURNALS

Cottage 2008 2007 2006 2005 2004

January 2006
Spot I think Daddoo's kitten, Kevin, is sick.  He keep making a strange noise -  "Hoo-ah!" in a deep voice.  Maybe he has bird feathers stuck in his throat - that happens to me sometimes.  And he keeps using words I have never heard Mommy or Daddoo use: recruiter, PT, boot camp, and Fort Benning.
Maybe he drank the water under the Christmas tree like Miss Malt...

February 2006
February 1 Smokette Daddoo took Smokie away in "The Cage" this morning.  I am very concerned - they don't put us in "The Cage" unless we are going into the "Road Monster" and to "The Place of Needles."
But Smokie hasn't been feeling very well and he says every so often that he's not a kitten anymore.  I keep telling him that he's only 66 (cat) years old and that one of GrandDaddoo's cats owned him for 102 years!
I hope he comes home tonight with Daddoo.  Tomorrow is Groundhog Day and we always celebrate together - we can't be apart on Groundhog Day!

February 20 Miss. Malt Mommy and Daddoo took Kevin away.  They put him in one of the road monsters and left and came back without him.  It's been almost a week and Kevin hasn't come back.  Smokie has already taken over Kevin's bed, but Smokette says she gets Kevin's room if he doesn't come back by Wednesday.

April 2006
April 5 Smokie Kevin never did come back.  His room is my room now.  It is getting hot outside - time to shed more than usual.  My paws still hurt.  Daddoo says I have Paw-itis and that I'm getting old.  I agree.  Smokette and I are both on up there in years now.

April 18 Smokie Smokette was trying to bribe her way into the house last night.  When Mommy opened the back door she ran in and dropped a mouse on the kitchen floor.  Daddoo was asleep so Mommy put a glass over the mouse for Daddoo to take care of this morning.  When Daddoo took the glass up I immediately attempted to eat this rare treat but Daddoo got upset and took the mouse away.

April 19 Spot! Mommy had a bad night.  She came home from work without Daddoo and went into the hall bathroom.  She came out quickly and stood in the hall for a few minutes peering into the bathroom.  Then she got two big books and she threw one of them at the toilet!  Then she threw the other one behind the toilet!
Then she quickly closed the door and stuffed a towel under the door and went to use Daddoo's bathroom.
Then she called Daddoo and told him that there was a horror-movie sized southeastern tarantula in the bathroom and that when he got home he had to go in there and kill it or we would have to sell Cottage Larsen!
To make a long story short - humans are so dramatic - before Daddoo got home to save Mommy, Daddoo's Daddoo stopped by for a surprise visit and Mommy told him about the nuclear-leak sized spider locked in the bathroom and Grand-Daddoo took care of it while Mommy screamed.

April 30 Milkshake Daddoo left yesterday morning and didn't come home last night!  Mommy has been alone for two days and she has gone crazy - she picked roses in the neighbor's backyard, she made blueberry muffins, she cleaned, she played with her yarn for hours, and she also went outside and dug in the dirt for hours!
She went away and came back with more smelly plants - Miss Malt likes to sniff and lick them.
Bird season started last week and Mommy has not been understanding.  This morning, we saw a small bird making a nest in one of Mommy's birdhouses - the one on the mailbox.  So I jumped on top of the mailbox, knocked the birdhouse down, and pulled the nest out of the birdhouse.  Mommy found it this morning and there was an unbroken egg in the dirt under the mailbox.  Mommy was very upset.
Then, instead of waiting for dinner time, I hid under one of the trees where Mommy's birdfeeders are and caught a bird for dinner.
I am the best hunter at Cottage Larsen and I catch a lot of my own meals - you think Mommy would be proud of me...

May 2006
May 5 Miss Malt There were two ducks and a goose in the back pasture this morning.  It was very strange.  They live at a pond about 1/4 of a mile away.  I guess they were hunting crickets or something.  The other cats were intrigued.   I told them that geese and ducks are large birds but they didn't believe me.

May 18 Smokette The goose and ducks are still roaming the neighborhood.  Mommy thinks the goose is the leader and the white duck and mallard duck are just following the goose.  She is thinking about writing a children's story about them.
This morning, the goose and ducks were hanging out in the road in front of Cottage Larsen.  Mommy told them to get out of the road but the goose hissed at her and made an obscene tail gesture... so uncivilized!

May 25 Milkshake Mommy and Daddoo left yesterday morning and never came back.  Two boys have been coming by the house to feed us and fill our water bowl.

May 26 Spot! I want Mommy and Daddoo.  I'm scared.  I've had to sleep outside the past two nights!

May 27 Smokie Mommy and Daddoo returned to Cottage Larsen today.  We are very upset with them.  When they told me to guard and put me in charge when they left Wednesday morning they didn't say anything about leaving for a few days.  I will sit with my back to them for a couple of days to express my disappointment.

June 2006
June 1 Miss. Malt They did it again!  Mommy and Daddoo left this morning and didn't come back.  This time they filled our bowls with more food than we have ever seen at one time!  I hope they come back soon... the raccoons, possums, and neighborhood cats are having a feast on the food they left us.

June 2 Smokette Mommy and Daddoo came home today with a surprise - they brought Kevin home!
Smokie says he must have been sick and at "the place of needles" because he lost a lot of weight.
Miss Malt researched his strange behavior before they took him away and how different he is now and her theory is that like some species of bugs, people sometimes designate some of their population to be warriors - to protect their people and their cottages.
Miss Malt thinks Kevin has become an army-ant person!

June 5 Spot! I am mad at Mommy and Daddoo!  First, they left us alone twice in the past two weeks; then they brought Kevin back; and now Kevin's female companion is here all the time.  She isn't mean or anything - but she is tall!  Taller than Mommy and Daddoo and Kevin!  I am scared of tall things.
It took me a long time to not be scared of the trees - they have long arms and could reach down and grab me!  I haven't slept inside since last week.  I want my spot on the couch back!  I get burs in my fur when I sleep in the bushes.

June 22 Milkshake Smokette is in trouble - ha ha!  Last night, Daddoo took the cover off of the big thing we sit on sometimes on the back deck.  Then he opened the thing's mouth, pushed some buttons, and put some fish in it's mouth.
Daddoo did this last week with pork chops and hamburgers as well.
Mommy told us not to jump up there if the thing's mouth is open because we would burn our paws.
Anyway, after the fish had been in there for a while, Daddoo took it out of the thing's mouth and brought the fish into the house on a plate.  He and Mommy came back outside for a few minutes while the rice and baby trees finished cooking - but they forgot Smokette was inside!
When they went back in Smokette was on the counter eating the fish!  Mommy yelled and Smokette jumped down with a big piece of fish in her mouth and dropped it on the floor.

July 2006
July 5 Spot! I don't feel well.

July 6 Smokette Kevin came home today with several large portable closets.  One of them was at least 5 feet long and very flat.  Smokie did as Miss Malt suggests and curled up in Kevin's backpack so he wouldn't leave.
I used to think that all Smokie cares about is having his own room again.  But he seemed distressed that Kevin is leaving.
Miss Malt is also very solemn.

July 7 Miss Malt Spot is sick.  Her neck is swollen and she meows and hisses when Daddoo touches it.  She won't eat and just lays on a blankie on the back deck.
Mommy says she will take Spot to the Place of Needles on Saturday if she isn't better.  Daddoo thinks she was bit by a snake.

July 9 Smokie I have my room back.  Daddoo took Kevin away again on Friday and came back without him.  Then Daddoo cleaned Kevin's room and it doesn't look like Kevin's room anymore.  Then, Mommy started a collection on the bed of the magic sticks which change the colors of the walls.  I hate it when she does that - it makes the room stink for days!

July 10 Milkshake Spot feels better now.  She still has a big knot on her chest that Mommy and Daddoo check every morning and evening.  But she started eating, bathing, running, and jumping again.  Mommy didn't have to take her to the Place of Needles after all.

July 27

3,650 Days
Celebration!
Spot! Mommy and Daddoo are celebrating.  They have been married 3,650 days!  Daddoo gave Mommy a collar with a gold heart tag on it when she woke up this morning.  She was very happy.  Smokette used to have a purple collar with rhinestones, but she took it off and hid it.
Miss Malt pointed out that when you take Leap Years into account that Mommy and Daddoo have actually been married longer than 3,650 days.
Miss Malt told Mommy this but Mommy thought she was asking for more crunchies.  We are having a crunchy crisis.
Daddoo saw that our brand of cat food came out with a "natural" cat food - so he bought a bag.  Smokette, Milkshake, and I will eat any crunchies - but Smokie and Miss Malt are on a hunger-strike until our old crunchies are returned.
My neck is better but it is still swollen and it itches.  Now when I go into the backyard, I look very carefully before I take steps to make sure there are no snakes waiting to bite me.

September 2006
Sept. 20 Smokie Mommy went away for dinner and came home with A DOG!  She came in the house with it under her arm and called out to Daddoo, "Can I have a puppy?"  Daddoo wasn't too impressed.  But he did admit that the dog is cute.  The dog and I curled up and slept on a pillow in the living room.
Sept. 20 Smokette This is completely unauthorized!  Cats rule and dogs drool!
Sept. 20 Milkshake BAD MOMMY - bringing home a dog!
Sept. 20 Spot! Run, run, run, run, run!
Sept. 24 Milkshake I have to sleep in a tree like a squirrel to be safe.  This is degrading.

Sept. 29 Miss. Malt It has been 9 days since Mommy brought that beast home.  I am going on strike.  I will not step foot in the yard or house again until they get rid of "Pukie."  But I am hungry....

October 2006
Oct. 4 Smokie Where's my Pookie?
Oct. 7 Smokie Mommy and Daddoo gave my Pookie away.
