Out of Bounds Ensemble to Present Workshops and Concert as Part of Winthrop University Residency.
The Charlotte regions premiere professional contemporary chamber music ensemble, the Out of Bounds Ensemble, will present two concerts this fall: Friday, September 4, 2009 at 7:30 p.m. in Bryant Recital Hall at Central Piedmont Community College, and Sunday, September 13, 2009 at 7:30 p.m. in Barnes Recital Hall at Winthrop University. The ensemble will also participate in a residency at Winthrop University on September 13 and will present workshops. Both concerts will feature music by iconic 20th century composers George Crumb - Vox Balaenae (Voice of the Whale), Charles Ives - Largo for Violin, Clarinet and Piano, and Arnold Schoenberg - Pierrot Lunaire, Part II. As part of the Winthrop residency, the ensemble members will present a workshop for Winthrop music students on the topic of instrumental and vocal extended techniques, many of which can be heard in the works presented on the concert. They will also participate in a reading of student composers works and a music business seminar for Winthrop music students. All residency events will take place on the campus of Winthrop University in Rock Hill, SC in Barnes Recital Hall. The Winthrop residency is supported by a grant from Winthrop University s Sponsored Grants and Resources program. For a schedule of the residency events see the Out of Bounds Ensemble web site at http://www.birdnest.org/parksr/OBE/index.html.
The Out of Bounds Ensemble was formed in 2008 under the guidance of Winthrop University pianist and music theorist Tomoko Deguchi and is the new music ensemble-in-residence at both Winthrop University and Central Piedmont Community College. The founding members (Tomoko Deguchi - piano, Leonard Mark Lewis - composer/piano, Craig Bove - composer, Ronald Parks - composer, and Geoff Whitehead - conductor/tuba) formed the ensemble in order to bring new and established contemporary works for chamber ensemble to a wider audience in the Charlotte region and to encourage the creation and performance of new music by regional composers. The residency and concert will feature OBE musicians Amy Orsinger Whitehead - flute, Reese Manceaux - clarinet, Judy Meister - violin, Nick Lampo - cello, Kristen Wonderlich - soprano, Tomoko Deguchi - piano, Mark Lewis - piano. Geoff Whitehead serves as the ensembles conductor.
