About Winthrop University

Winthrop University was
founded when David Bancroft and twenty-one
students met in a one room building in
Columbia, South Carolina back in 1886.
Winthrop University found its
permanent home in Rock Hill, South Carolina
in 1895, when brick by brick, the one room
school house was moved.
Winthrop is home of the
Winthrop Golden Eagles.
The university participates in
Division I athletics and is a part of the
Big South Conference.

About Rock
Hill
Rock Hill is located in York County,
just 25 miles from Charlotte,
North
Carolina and about 70 miles north of
Columbia, South
Carolina.
Upon entering Rock Hill, one will notice
a sign that says “no room for racism,” the
city’s bold statement on equality of all its
visitors as well as citizens.
One will also notice four “Civitas”
statues on Dave Lyle Boulevard.
Each of these “Civitas” hold discs
that symbolize the four different industries
in the city: gears for business, flame for
knowledge, stars strand for inspiration and
creativity, and a lightning bolt for energy.
