Six young ladies envisioned a horizon that became the dawn of a new day, March 25th 1989 at Winthrop College. They desired to focus their eyes on the burning torch of the illustrious, outstanding and highly respected sisterhood of Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority Inc. With the assistance of the Xi Sigma Alumnae Chapter of Spartanburg, SC and the approval of the National President, Dr. Katie Kinard White through Southeastern Region this vision would be possible. The six ladies who started Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority at Winthrop College were Velma Burgess, Schenita Goston, Carylon Gordon, Daphine Gleen, Paula Gailliard and Jennifer Robinson known as "Mission Impossible". The hard work and dedication of these ladies motivated and sparked interest In Sigma that continued others to want to learn about their standards. "Mission Impossible" led to the addition of five more exemplary and committed ladies on November 25th Kristy Neely, Sharon Wallace, Robin Goldsmith, Veronica Tracy, and Althea Webster known as "Pieces of a dream". In joint sisterhood, six ladies from Clemson University saw the same horizon, on October 13, 1989. They were: Clarrisa Pegrees, Thais Turner, Benita Blocker, Melissa Geter, Sandra Jones, and Felica New known as "Unfinished Business."
The Winthrop Chapter received it's charter on September 27, 1989 having ten girls with the grade point average of 2.5 or better under the Beta Epsilon Chapter of Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority Inc. of Columbia, S.C.
