Sigma Gamma Rho Poetry

May the things that make me Sigma
Be the things that guide my day,
May the torch of dear Aurora
Light the path along my way.
May my life be so exemplary
That everyone will know
Just by my deeds, that I am
Apart of Sigma Gamma Rho.

-Soror Eleanor Richardson

When there is hearty handshake
In the bond of sisterhood
There is love, and something noble;
Something great and good.
This exists in one sorority
The grandest that we know
One that stands for the highest ideals-
Sigma Gamma Rho!

 -Soror Aubrie Johnson

I AM
Deeper than the bluest sea
Brighter than the shining sun
Birthed from the body of greatness
Destined to be the best
"Greater Service, Greater Progress" is what I strive to build
Blessed to be a blessing is the life I try to live
In case you haven't guessed, and you really want to know
I AM a woman of Sigma Gamma Rho

Blue and Gold
The Fellowship of the blue and gold
Is a fellowship complete,
For here we find the kindred mind
Of love serene and sweet.
The sisterhood for which we seek
Is given without measure.
Devotion to Humanity
Is Sigma's dearest treasure.
This Blue and Gold Sorority
Is a group whose social clime
Show smiles across their faces.
Come now to me, Young ready heart;
Let Sigma Gamma Rho unfold
To you the sweetest sisterhood,
Where meets the blue and gold.

-Soror Hattie Minor

7 Degrees of Sigma

I am serene.
But a true revolutionary
My face shows exultance and power.
Intelligence is my forte.
My strength is in the alluvian
While my beauty vogues above others.
I transcend above those who seek to bring me down....
I am a degree that can be compared to none other
I am Sigma

-Soror April Blanding

Why I Wanted To Be A Sigma

In today's world of chaos and doubt
There's a fine group of women
Who know what they're about;
Their aims and ideals soar towards the sky;
Their aspirations and high standards
This world can't defy-
That's why I wanted to be a SIGMA!
They march as shining beacons of light--
Soldiers of those virtues that ever endure;
Carrying torches that stand for the right--
Lighting pathways noble and pure.
Giving their service -- doing their best,
Eager for knowledge -- standing today's test.
That's why I wanted to be a SIGMA!
Their banner waves as they march along;
"Greater service -- Greater Progress" is seen.
Several hundred -- true and strong,
Filled with courage and intellect keen.
Shoulders erect and heads held high--
Their purity of ideals -- none can deny.
That's why I wanted to be a SIGMA!
Onward they march -- this courageous band;
Ever knowing there's more to do.
The finest women of our land
Firmly united in a sisterhood true.
Challenging women -- a fine group to know--
Progressing through service -- Sigma Gamma Rho!
That's why I wanted to be a SIGMA!
-Soror Fredda Witherspoon

As I walked through the halls of Greekdom,
And searched far and wide,
I found a group of sisters,
Who seemed to have true pride.

Their sisterhood and service,
Are mottos that they hold,
After that no doubt about it,
I had to be Blue and Gold.

~ Soror Rhonda Lofton

I AM DIVINE

Gently graceful, yet elusively powerful.
The blood of queens flows through my veins.
My ancestors ruled under royal blue skies and donned crowns of pure gold.
I am the living dream of my ancestors.
In the company of my sisters, I serve others selflessly.
The spirit of my founders guides me, their light shines within me ever so brightly.
I am the living dream of my founders.
Curious are the eyes who stare as I go, and it's no wonder,
I am a woman of Sigma Gamma Rho.

God Created A Special Woman...

Her body He shaped from the most selective sands
With warmth in her heart and strength in her hands.
Into her, carefully, a special air He breathed.
A special understanding for all the world to see.
Into her veins, He pumped kindness and truth
Carefully nurtured and each day renewed.
A monument of pride, strength, and love.
Blessed with virtues from God above.
Her presence is a light showing the path to go.
God created a special woman -- The woman of Sigma Gamma Rho!

Sigma Gamma Rho - Specialty

It takes a special kind of woman to be a Sigma.

One who is graceful and filled with poise and dignity.
One who is strong in mind and sincere in heart.
One who is not sluggish or derogatory, but ambitious, zealous, and industrious.
One who is aware of self but who is not indifferent to others.
One who is willing sometimes to place the needs of others above those of her own.
One who reaches out and is not afraid to touch.
One who is willing to work for the community in order to better others, as well as herself.
One who is not easily discouraged and when the chips are down, her spirit remains high.
One who knows that real sisterhood is and everyday thing; and it should be spread not only throughout the Sorority, but throughout the community and the world.

It takes a special kind of woman to be a Sigma... A very special kind of woman.
For to be a Sigma is indeed something special.

Out of a Crowd of Millions

Out of a crowd of millions, I will emerge to be.
I am destined to be the star of every galaxy.
And when I arrive all eyes are on me.
More distinguished than any other, I am a rarity.
I am the first encounter of every kind,
So ethereal, dominating, and refined.
Suave, sexy, strong, and unmistakably envied
By all those who desire to belong to me.
But my complexity is too intense to see.
Yet, even I am amazed b my own ability.
I am BAD from HEAD to TOE!
I am a woman of Sigma Gamma Rho.

A Talk With God

One day I asked God for the best He had new,
He said, "Take the richness of the color Royal Blue."
I then asked God for the best He had old,
He said, "Take my wonderful Antique Gold."
I told God I was searching for love in the Earth,
for value and sisterhood with women of worth.
He said, "What's best for you, I'll always know.
Here, meet your sisters... Sigma Gamma Rho."
I said, "God, we're all so different.  What can we do?"
He said, "Learn to love each other as I love all of you."
I said, "God, that's so hard.  We can't make it come true!"
He said, "It's hard - Yes! But I command that you do."
I set out on my journey.  Pledged my time and mind,
Learning how to love while I was on line.
As I grew into a Sigma and walked the burning sands,
my loving sisters accepted me, holding forth their hands.
I see them and I meet them everywhere I go.
It is glorious to have others with me as I grow.
So God, for my sorors, I thank you so!
The satisfying sisterhood of Sigma Gamma Rho!

The Sigma Woman
Her beauty is radiant and you can see it in her eyes
What is she?  A Sigma Woman
The glory around her can not be hidden by a disguise
What is she?  A Sigma Woman
She wears her colors like the royalty she is
What is she?  A Sigma Woman
When she walks, guys heads turn and they want her to be his
What is she?  A Sigma Woman
Inside she is very strong and knowledgeable too
What is she?  A Sigma Woman
The talents she possess can be seen through and through
What is she?  A Sigma Woman
She is the ultimate perfection for a woman to me and you
What is she?  A Sigma Woman
A SIGMA GAMMA RHO WOMAN!

75th
Sigma Gamma Rho
was founded in 1922
By seven school teachers
In gold and royal blue
Soror Mary Lou Allison Gardner Little
was her name
The founding of Sigma Gamma Rho
was her main programme
Soror Nannie Mae Gahn Johnson
was a great teacher indeed
For she helped the little children
when they were in need
Soror Bessie Downey Rhodes Martin
was a true soldier
Any time someone needed her
they could always cry on her shoulder
Soror Cuebena McClure
was an effective and creative one within
For she helped to design
the Sigma pin
Soror Hattie Mae Annette Dullin Redford
was the mother of none
But she loved teaching and Sigma Gamma Rho dearly
like the God given sun
Soror Dorothy Hanley Whiteside
was a hard working sista' for sure
For she helped the sick
And through God she was able to endure
Soror Vivian White Marbury
I saved for last
Because she is the only one
who can explain the Sigma past
Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority Inc.
is a great sorority
And that is no myth
That is why were are still strong
in 1997
Celebrating our 75th.

 I Am My Sista's Keeper

I am my sista's keeper
she keeps me as I keep her
sista has kept me for more than 75 some years
and I have kept her for most of my lifetime

sista has kept my momma
and my great grandma too
 sista keeps me
soothes me
consoles me
and comforts me in my time of need

sista laughs with me
shouts with me
cries with me
prays
heals
befriends
and loves me
as only a sista can

sista is my light
my torch burning
my ruby heart
my pearls
my diamonds
my seven founders
my french poodle
my royal blue
my afrikan gold
my greater service, greater progress
in world most do not know

sista loves me
loves me
loves me

sista knows me
knows me
knows me

sista keeps me
keeps me
keeps me like no sorority but
SIGMA GAMMA RHO

A Step Into My Womanhood

Stepping on campus
Trying to find a way
To be that special person
A woman, one day

Just minding my own Business
To see what was going on
I had a talk with the Sigmas
To see what they had to say

I was flabberghasted, in awe
Surprised to see
A room full of beautiful women
And they were just like me

Well they took me under their wing
Along with two others too
And showed us how to be 'Sigma Women'
In that antique gold and royal blue

I never thought I would have friends like these
A sister I've never had
They love me with such unconditional love
Without it I'd go mad

They make sure I'm on my homework
And pick me up when I'm down
They tell me it's okay to cry
A new family I have found

I'm learning what it means to be a woman
With all the right qualities
A 'Sigma Woman' is the 'Best' woman
A young lady could want to be

So I must say thank-you
Sorors
For all that you give
You are the best thing that could have
Happened to me
And I will remember that
For as long as I live

~ Soror Mekonya Cheefus

Aurora Dawn

We are women of the light,
royal in our bearing
golden in our worth.
Women reverenced in the Earth
Time has made us great.
God made us unique.
In love, in light, we display what it is to be blessed
The Royal Blue.
The Gold.
The Sigma Gamma Rho Soror.
The best.

~ Soror Terri Lyons

A Poem for New Sorors

Undergraduate Sorors will RHOad Trip and visit you...
While some of us Graduate Sorors you won't meet...
But maybe one day while we are traveling....
You'll look and see me across the street...
Just come over and say Hello Soror...
You are a member of the Sorority that I chose...
I see that Sigma Gamma Rho smile on your face
Oh the mighty Rhoyal Blue, and the Yellow Tea Rose...
Soror, I don't know you very well...
But a true sister you seem to be...
Your bubbling down earth personality...
That's a true Sigma Gamma Rho quality...
So Sorors as you are traveling...
Whether it be near or far...
Keep the Sigma Gamma Rho torch burning....
For Sigma Gamma Rho Women is who we truly are...

~ Soror Cherie R. Johnson

The Sorority I Chose

Didn't look for a large sorority.
Didn't look for one that was well known.
Didn't look for colors,
When I chose one to call my own.
Didn't look for who was first.
Didn't care who organized was last.
Didn't care it they had a few members.
Didn't even really care about their past.
Didn't care who the Celebrity Sorors were,
Didn't matter if they had none at all.
Didn't care if they ruled the yard,
Didn't even care what was their call.
For when I chose Sigma Gamma Rho,
The Sorors were geniue and real.
That's what I wanted,
Sisters who would listen to me,
Sisters who are for real.
Sisters with joint goals in mind.
Sisters willing to stand for what's right.
Sisters willing to help their fellowman,
Sisters giving their all when things get tight..
Well its been 27 years that I have been a member
Of Sigma Gamma Rho.
Through the good times, Through the bad,
I love you Sorors of Sigma Gamma Rho.
So if anyone should ask you,
About the Sorority that you chose,
Tell them about the good that we do,
Tell them to touch, see, and smell the Yellow Tea Rose.
Tell them and show them by your sisterly deeds.
Sigma Gamma Rho doesn't have to explain herself to anyone
Just let them look and they will see.
Sigma Gamma Rho was right for you,
And Yes Sigma Gamma Rho was right for me.

~ Soror Cherie R. Johnson

An Ideal Sigma

A young lady who has a lot to offer,
No vulgarity or boastfulness is a part of her.
And who is willing to lend a hand
For Sigma, she'll always stand.

Sympathy is a part of her for the poor.
Never a stray she turns from her door.
To her, the love of God is a must
And in all she places her trust.

Sigma's Hymn she will sing with all her might
So that from its radiance others will see the light.
The pin, she will wear with a great deal of respect
But she's a Sigma-what can we expect?

~ Soror Mattie Lee Hollida

Sigma Quotes
Read below for some Pearls of Wisdom
from Sigma Sorors:

"Sisterhood for me is being able to share life experiences with each other,
knowing that if you need to talk to someone other
than Jesus, there is always a sister/Soror, that you can call.
Sisterhood means going to any length for your sister. It means
getting up out of bed at 2 or 3 o'clock in the morning if you are needed in an
emergency situation. Sisterhood is mentoring younger Sorors so that they too exemplify finer
womanhood at all times. Also knowing that there are various aspects of finer
woamanhood. Sisterhood is having love for your Soror regardless of her faults,
and accepting her where she is, not mandating
that she has to be like you but can be herself and still be a Sigma Woman.

Soror Carolyn R. Willis

Quality not Quantity.  I think that's one of the best things about my sorority.
I look at other sororities and their respective chapters and
have to wonder why would some people even thinking about joining an
organization that's either so big that you don't know who your sister is or so
divided, that you can't trust your sister not to talk about you behind
your back.  I love our intake process and invitation only selection and I
think that helps us overcome the pettiness and immaturity that comes with
just accepting anybody.  SGRho represents true quality and
I'll stand by that.  EEE-yip my sorors."

"I am just writing to express how proud I am to belong to such a wonderful
organization.  Before I became a member of Sigma Gamma Rho, I did not know
too much about the sorority but I knew the "others" were not for me.
Sigma Gamma Rho was my first and only choice and I know it was the RIGHT
choice!!! No regrets whatsoever.  I hope my sorors keep God in their
lives and Blue and Gold in their hearts."
