On March 22, 1977, Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Incorporated granted a charter to thirteen young ladies at Winthrop College in Rock Hill, South Carolina. These women were Janet Rose Adams, Deborah Dianne Brown, Deborah Jo Davis, Gwendolyn Marene Crome, Miriam Yvonne Crome, Gloria Alfreda Golightly, Deborah Deneece Jones, Brenda Lorraine Norwood, Sateria Laverne Padgett, Carol Teresa Owens, Myrna Janis Simmons, Cheryl Ann Samuel, and Jovada Lynn Sims. Diligently, these woman worked to convince the school officials and the National body that they could carry out the ideals of Finer Womanhood, Scholarship, Service and Sisterly Love on the campus. These young ladies were chartered in an official Winthrop ceremony on April 2, 1977. On this day, Zeta Phi Beta Sorority became the first predominately Black organization admitted on the College's campus, the third National Organization on the Winthrop College campus and the seventh undergraduate chapter chartered in South Carolina. |
